For every American Jew, the bond with Israel is a passion of the heart, and the 60th anniversary of Israel is a special milestone. Over the past 60 years, there have been times of war, conflict, and difficulty. There have also been times of excitement and pride. And through it all, the hope has remained alive.
In 2008, we celebrate the strength of that hope, its persistence in the face of hate and violence and the many successes and accomplishments of the Israelis. The celebration of this anniversary offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with our homeland and to strengthen the connections that bring us together as a people.
Jewish Milwaukee is planning for a year-long celebration, filled with special events, concerts, lectures, walks and other activities that will unite our community and help us to educate the broader community about the hope, the history and the wonder that is Israel.
Milwaukee’s Israel at 60 Committee
Through the leadership of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Israel and Overseas Committee, the Federation is coordinating Milwaukee’s Israel at 60 initiative. Chaired by respected, long-time MJF volunteer Betty Chrustowski, co-chaired by Mike Green, Todd Richheimer and Jessie Freschl, the Israel at 60 Committee has more than 30 enthusiastic volunteer members.
“My vision of this initiative is that it be inclusive: our role is to build community around the idea of celebrating Israel and to promote Israel in a positive light.” says Betty Chrustowksi. “The Committee represents the vitality and diversity of Jewish Milwaukee.”
