Israel at 75: Understanding This Moment

Featuring author and journalist Matti Friedman

With 15 weeks of protest, a pause on judiciary reform, and rising emotion, it’s time to gain a deeper understanding about the political structure that has led to the current crisis in Israel. Join us as author and journalist Matti Friedman addresses the Israeli social makeup, concerns for democracy, and the role of diaspora Jews in supporting Israel through this crisis.

Matti Friedman, who served in the IDF, is a journalist and the award-winning author of four works of non-fiction.

A former Associated Press correspondent, Matti’s work as a reporter has taken him from Israel to Lebanon, Morocco, Moscow, the Caucasus, and Washington, DC. Two critical essays he wrote about media coverage of Israel after the 2014 Gaza war, for Tablet and The Atlantic, triggered intense discussion. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Tablet, Smithsonian, and elsewhere.

Matti was born in Toronto and lives in Jerusalem.

NextGen Comedy Night with Noam Shuster-Eliassi

Join MJF’s NextGen for an evening with acclaimed Israeli comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi. Enjoy a laugh with Noam as she addresses controversial topics through comedy. The show is laugh-out-loud hilarious and aims to entertain Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. You won’t want to miss this one!

DUGRI: Let’s Talk Straight

Join MJF in welcoming the iconic rap duo Dugri to Milwaukee. In a country where Arabs and Jews often live parallel lives, a rap duo consisting of an Israeli and a Palestinian hope to challenge some of the pre-conceived barriers to reach a “mutually beneficial reality.”

Israel in Wisconsin: The story of the Israeli Mishlachat in Milwaukee & Madison

Chanshi TV Screening

Join MJF as we screen the first two episodes of the TV show Chanshi. The screenings will be followed by a virtual discussion with creator and star, Aleeza Chanowitz.

About Chanshi: A girl from the Jewish community, immigrates to Israel and embarks on a wild journey, but the transition from a life with clear rules to a life without any rules at all, throws her into a whirlwind of life experiences.

Join the Milwaukee Jewish Federation in welcoming Rabbanit Mirvis to our community to share her story on being the first-ever woman appointed to be the sole spiritual leader of an Israeli Orthodox community. About Rabbanit Mirvis:

Shira grew up in Jerusalem to parents who made Aliyah from Morocco. She has studied Torah in the Matan Women’s Institute for Torah Studies, the Women’s Beit Midrash of Efrat and Gush Etzion, Midreshet Lindenbaum’s Women’s Institute for Halakhic Leadership, and Beit Hillel’s Beit Midrash for Communal Leadership. In addition, she holds a BA in Psychology and Information Sciences from Bar-Ilan University.
