The Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies is delighted to bring Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell to Milwaukee as part of its series, “The Colors of Jewishness.” Anthony Russell is a vocalist, composer and arranger specializing in Yiddish art and folk song, chazones, and Chasidic nigunim.
Two years after his conversion to Judaism, Russell decided to devote himself to the music of Sidor Belarsky (1898-1975) one of the twentieth century’s most prolific performers of chazzanut, Chassidic nigunim, and Yiddish art song. Russell recounts his journey from his African-American, Christian, operatic roots in to the rich, vibrant world of Ashkenazi Jewish culture and Yiddish song.
This event is free and open to the public.
