JCRC Statement on the Rittenhouse Verdict

The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation recognizes the deep pain and anger caused by the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse.

We are appalled at the interpretation of this verdict by some extremists as permission for armed vigilantism. Our first amendment rights are vital to democracy and must not be impeded by those who would use or threaten violence against protesters.

We are also profoundly concerned that this verdict is being cheered by white supremacists as a victory for their movement and legal validation of their tactics. This is not a time for celebration.

The JCRC is guided by and committed to the pursuit of justice and equality for all. To comment on this case, we must acknowledge the context of the stark racial disparities in the rates of prosecution and incarceration of people of color in Kenosha and elsewhere.

We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Kenosha and our community partners in praying for healing and ensuring an equitable justice system. We are committed to working together towards a vision of a peaceful and just world.
